I sit as the rain rolls down the windows It's 2 on a frosty morn in the spring The TV's blaring music loud The birds are singing proud And I'm just waiting for the chaos mornings bring But who's watching out, who's watching out for us? Who's watching out, who's watching out for the likes of us? As I think of you, the one on the corner of the road My mind comes to a tree beside my house The strongest thing in all the world By wind or gale can soon be hurled And as I walk the wood falls to the ground So who's watching out, who's watching out for you? Who's watching out, who's watching out for me and you? How can anyone say it's just a phase When everybody else feels those ways? How can anyone say it's just a phase When everybody else feels those ways? The railway going through the land The sun above, God's touching hand The law for man or the gambler's den The eagle or the lowly wren Pictures on a TV screen Lyrics from a bitter teen Records, words and ammunition All from this old-age vision The way we see each other now Taking their word, not asking how Friendship bonds and love so pure Splitting up, walking out the door At the end of days, the bell will ring The ones that are left all stand and sing: But who's watching out, who's watching out for us? Who's watching out, who's watching out for the likes of us? (repeat)

As I was a-walking one day upon the moor You would not believe what we saw Autumn like spring and summer like winter Death from a birth and blood from a splinter You would not believe what we saw You would not believe what we saw As we were a-walking one day upon the moor You would not believe what we saw Autumn like spring and summer like winter Death from a birth and blood from a splinter Let’s go walking, my darling, into the wood “Nice romantic walk,” we said “Hope there’s not too much mud” But as we set off on that cold winter evening The strands of time were already weaving “You’ve been put on hold,” they said, “Go make a cup of tea” “No please someone, speak to me” “You’ve been put on hold,” they said, “Go make a cup of tea” As I was a-walking with my maid oh so fair As we went strolling through the cold autumn air We came across a gypsy sitting on a log As we went on into the fog

As the sun sets on the hill top As the wind blows through the trees I know that the things that I do in these few months change my life With the buzz of cold strings fading And the start of the pound of drums I know that I’ve got to, know that I will be gone soon And though I know, I couldn’t care As the kite flies up mighty As the star falls from the sky I know you’ll be fine, I know that you’ll do brilliantly With your red hair and your crazy smile With your rosin and your telescope I know that the land falls away towards the sea And anything you do is better than a fall And though you wait for me I won’t be there Whoever you think you are I won’t be there Cos though I know what to do, I couldn’t care As the chalk falls off the blackboard As the band plays into the night I thought that it would get better, much better for me As the book shuts, words all tumble As the night dawns into day I thought that I knew what I had to do But now it’s gone, it’s back to the start

In Yarmouth town, there lived a man Who kept a tavern by the sand This landlord had a daughter fair A plump little thing with the golden hair Oh won't you come down, won't you come down, Won't you come down to Yarmouth town? Won't you come down, won't you come down, Won't you come down to Yarmouth town? Up to this tavern came a sailor man He asked the daughter for her hand Why should I marry you? she said I get all I want without being wed Oh won't you come down, won't you come down, Won't you come down to Yarmouth town? Won't you come down, won't you come down, Won't you come down to Yarmouth town? But she says if you want with me to linger I'll tie this string all around my finger You come by, you pull on the string I'll come down and I'll let you in Oh won't you come down, won't you come down, Won't you come down to Yarmouth town? Won't you come down, won't you come down, Won't you come down to Yarmouth town? So the very next night that sailor man He went to the tavern by the sand He went by, he pulled on the string, She came down and she let him in Oh won't you come down, won't you come down, Won't you come down to Yarmouth town? Won't you come down, won't you come down, Won't you come down to Yarmouth town? Well he'd never seen such a sight before The string round her finger was all she wore And when he went, he pulled on that string She pulled back the blankets and let Jack in Oh won't you come down, won't you come down, Won't you come down to Yarmouth town? Won't you come down, won't you come down, Won't you come down to Yarmouth town? And there he spent the whole night through And early in the morning went back to his crew Where he told them all about that maiden there The plump little thing with the golden hair Oh won't you come down, won't you come down, Won't you come down to Yarmouth town? Won't you come down, won't you come down, Won't you come down to Yarmouth town? And the word it soon got round And the very next night in Yarmouth town There were fifteen sailors pulling on the string She came down and she started to sing And won't you come down, won't you come down, Won't you come down to Yarmouth town? Won't you come down, won't you come down, Won't you come down to Yarmouth town? So come all you young sailors who down to Yarmouth do go To see this girl with her hair hung low Well all you've got to do is pull on that string She'll come down and she'll let you in Oh won't you come down, won't you come down, Won't you come down to Yarmouth town? Won't you come down, won't you come down, Won't you come down to Yarmouth town? (repeat)

There once was a man who walked the high seas Just to be rid of his children And he buttoned his coat as he roamed away O'er whatever the weather could send He fell to his knees and prayed for no more He fell as deep as an anchor He waited until the boat was no more And drank till the waves had sank her He swam to the shore and pulled himself up And though he'd been swimming for hours He'd happened to go to where he was born And back there is where he cowers And though he waited for somebody to come He'd be waiting for a long time Because they'd all left the island where he was from To punish him for his crime I'll be true I'll be true I'll be true Cos who's thinking of you? (repeat)

about

The Chapel Sessions are a set of releases to showcase new tracks arranged or written by me (Dan Simpson), in live recordings with my quartet. They are by no means finished, but the releases display how they sound at this stage of the journey. They’re all recorded in chapels or other places of worship, as these are often very tranquil buildings with good acoustics, which always helps. They are basic recordings, which may be a bit rough around the edges, but we are very proud of them. Hopefully they’ll let you (and us) remember what our songs sound like, and we hope you enjoy them.
By Wind or Gale is the first volume in this series, recorded at Christ Church in Uxbridge, West London, in April 2014. The lyrics of a few of these meander quite a lot, as they often deal with my mind, which does much the same thing, so sorry if you don’t quite get them, I probably don’t either. In the end, these overall probably contemplate life in general, loyalty and responsibilities, and the odd prostitute for good measure. I quite like them.
(The songs, not the prostitutes).

I’m really grateful.

Dan Simpson London, UK

Dan Simpson is quite good at playing music, but less good at writing a bio in a very small number of characters.
